Persepolae has fallen.
Karnopolis has burned.
As the dark forces of the Undead sweep across what remains of the empire, Nazafareen must obey the summons of a demon queen to save Darius's father, Victor. Burdened with a power she doesn't understand and can barely control, Nazafareen embarks on a perilous journey through the shadowlands to the House-Behind-the-Veil. But what awaits her there is worse than she ever imagined…
A thousand leagues away, Tijah leads a group of children on a desperate mission to rescue the prisoners at Gorgon-e Gaz, the stronghold where the oldest daevas are kept. To get there, they must cross the Great Salt Plain, a parched ruin occupied by the armies of the night. A chance encounter adds a ghost from the past to their number. But will they arrive in time to avert a massacre?
And in the House-Behind-the-Veil, Balthazar and the Prophet Zarathustra discover that they have more in common than meets the eye. But is it enough to salvage the necromancer's bloodstained soul and thwart his mistress's plans?
As a final showdown looms between Alexander the Great and Queen Neblis, the truth of the daevas' origins is revealed and three worlds collide in this thrilling conclusion to the Fourth Element series.
Queen of Chaos The Fourth Element Book 3 eBook Kat Ross
I enjoyed this series for many reasons, but I felt this final installment fell short of the expectations set in the other two. It earns 3.9 out of five stars from me.It's always difficult to hold my attention when the point of view shifts between more than three characters. Even though I understand why Ross used so many narrators in this book, it stifled my enjoyment. There could have been other ways to reveal the plot twists than using a person to narrate three scenes.
The tension and stakes were continually twisted tighter, making this book difficult to set aside. I'd come to care about the major characters, so I was vested in the outcome. However, it felt too slow to move the story along between the 40% and 65% marks, and then the climax and resolution slammed together. Also, the ending is more of a setup for other series than a resolution to this one (my opinion).
Some of the close calls were resolved in ways that seemed too convenient or highly unlikely, but nothing so unbelievable that I got kicked out of the story world (although I was shaking my head several times). Characters die. I felt some minor characters were pulled into this story just so they could be eliminated, thus saving major characters from paying that price.
The epilogue generated more questions than it answered, so I didn't have the sense of closure I need at the end of a series I engaged with as well as I did this one. That's the biggest reason for a less-than-five-star rating.
Still, I highly recommend this series to fantasy lovers. It's well-written and unique, and gives alternate history fiction two thumbs up.

Queen of Chaos The Fourth Element Book 3 eBook Kat Ross Reviews
This is actually a review of the three books of the Fourth Element trilogy (The Midnight Sea, Blood of the Prophet, Queen of Chaos) and the two (so far) books of the Dominion series (The Daemoniac, The Thirteenth Gate), so I am posting this on all five books. I read a lot, but rarely write reviews. In most cases I think it's all been said already, and I'd rather read than write. But I think these books are a unique case. I think Ms. Ross has done a marvellous job of blending real (though altered) history and actual places with mythology and the fantasy and magical elements. It was fun for me to pick out the realities, myths, and allusions in the stories. And as a Sherlock Holmes fan, I really like the way the Dominion series ties the Sherlock Holmes canon, New York City, the gaslight Victorian era, and the fantasy of the Fourth Element series together. I first read the Dominion series books, then the Fourth Element Trilogy. That worked okay, but I recommend reading the Fourth Element trilogy first because some things in the second series will be more clear and relevant. I highly recommend reading all of these. When Ms. Ross adds to these, I will be buying.
I LOVE this series!
** spoiler alert ** This series is officially one of my new favorites. I needed a new favorite.
Here is my only complaint I needed more.
What happens with Nazafareen & Darius? Does her memory ever come back? Does she learn to fall in love with him again without ever remembering their history & what they really meant to each other?
What becomes of Tijah? We know she runs off in search of all the Ghul's with Anu & Acheamenes. We know she stays bonded to him because she needs the lifetimes in order to hunt Ghul with them BUT does she discover her true feelings for him? Does she ever come to accept that his choice to bond himself to her, after he was free, is because of his love for her? Before the bond. Acheamenes was, in many ways a male Myrri and I think that was part of why he was so god for Tijah, he balanced her out nicely and while Myrri was good for Tijah in that pure and sisterly way, Acheamenes was a different kind of love, a redeeming one given all she went through with her father.
And finally, HOW did I NOT know that Alexander & Lysandros were lovers? I missed that one completely. I did not see that one coming and now I need to know more. For all his strength and hardness, Alexander turned out to have a heart of Gold there at the end. Lysandros willingly offered to bond himself for him, out of love and Alexander left him free. I loved that!
Its NOT that I didn't enjoy the end of how somethings did come full circle, I just feel like I need more. More time with Victor & Delilah, more time to experience peace and happiness with Nazafareen & Darius. More time to see Tijah fall in love. I just need more.
What a tremendous conclusion (or maybe not--see below) to one of my favorite YA fantasy series of recent years! Set in an alt-Persian Empire filled with evil elemental creatures called Druj and the human and superhuman beings who fight them, this complexly plotted and lovingly detailed story will draw you in from the start. QUEEN OF CHAOS begins with one of my favorite characters from the first two books, Tijah, leading a ragtag team of daeva (essentially, genie) children through a desert wasteland that's been ravaged by the Druj forces unleashed by Queen Neblis; it then moves into the perspective of principal heroine Nazafareen, whose relationship with her own daeva, Darius, has been sundered and whose elemental power is growing at a dangerous and unpredictable rate. I loved the decision to explore Tijah's perspective; she was a character I was hoping to see more of all along. And I continue to be impressed by Ross's ability to blend history with mythology in entirely convincing ways. This concluding story is exciting, frightening, tragic at times, and, in the end, utterly captivating.
And from what the author's note at the end of the book says, it might not be the concluding story! I don't want to give away too much--read the book if you want to know all the details--but it appears that Tijah's tale, at least, will continue. And that's something to cheer about!
